Kip Cooper, winner of the Present Around the World Competition

The winners of the IET Ambition and Achievement awards were announced on 25 November 2009 in a glitzy awards ceremony at Lords Cricket Ground. The afternoon was a huge success and was presented by former Tomorrow’s World presenter Kate Bellingham.

The awards recognise some of the world’s most outstanding engineers and technologists and acknowledge the talents of some exceptional students and young professionals.

Ceremony

The first part of the awards ceremony focused on the IET's Ambition awards. The purpose of the Ambition awards programme is both to celebrate the achievements of talented young engineering and technology professionals and to offer them financial and practical support throughout their studies.

The ceremony also included the global final of  the "Present around the World Competition", a technical presentation competition for students and young professionals. Four contestants from across the globe gave a ten minute presentation at the awards ceremony. The winner of the international final was Kip Cooper from New Zealand, who received a £1,000 cash prize and the runner-up, Wen Xia, received £500.

The second part of the IET awards ceremony paid tribute to the recipients of the IET's Achievement awards. The Achievement awards programme recognises and rewards excellence in individuals within the engineering and technology fields. The programme covers students and young professionals who are in the early stages of their career through to individuals who are at the pinnacle of their careers.

The IET also made a Special Recognition Award for the Support of Emerging Technologies to the Isle of Man Government during the ceremony, for their contribution to the advancement of science, engineering and technology, and in particular, low carbon vehicle technology.

Sponsors

None of these achievements would have been possible without the support of the companies who generously sponsored the 2009 IET Ambition and Achievement awards programme: BAE Systems, BP, EDF Energy, E.ON, Lockheed Martin and Pace plc.

Success

Over the last four years, the IET has been conducting a carefully choreographed marketing campaign to increase awareness of the IET Scholarships and awards programme. The IET is delighted that, in 2009, the scholarships programme enabled the IET to reach over 12,000 school teachers, several hundred university academics and thousands of students and parents. During peak periods of the year, the IET’s awards website received over 40,000 unique visitors per month. The success of the campaign was ultimately proven by the fact that the number of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship applications almost tripled in 2009.
